A Season of Struggle, Determination, and an Unforgettable Comeback
Baseball season ended about a month ago and while I may have cleaned the last pair of dirt stained uniform pants and shaken all the turf pebbles out of my son’s cleats, I can’t help reflecting on the season that almost never was. The season that almost couldn’t have been. And the season that was. A season of struggle, determination, and an unforgettable comeback.
From Football Dreams to Thursday Night Lights
I remember exactly where he was a year ago. Starting middle school, navigating new classes, meeting new people, and trying out for the 7th grade football team wondering if he’d get a chance to play. He’d never played before but with the build for football and the desire to try something new, he showed up for tryouts one warm afternoon in August after school let out, with a water bottle in hand and hope in his heart.
Lessons Learned from Football
Making the cut for the ‘A’ team had been a big deal to him. He made new friends, learned how to manage schoolwork, social life, and still memorize plays in his spare time. Football taught him camaraderie, perseverance, and the value of showing up, even when it was hard. It gave him confidence he hadn’t known he had, and a sense of pride in what he could accomplish with dedication and effort.

When Everything Changed
The team was undefeated, and they were facing the only other undefeated team in their conference for the final game of the season when it happened. One wrong step, one push too far, and suddenly the cheers and excitement turned into silence and pain. A clean break to the tibia and fibula after an opponent landed hard against his right leg while he was attempting to “push the pile” for extra yardage.

Surgery, Setbacks, and Small Victories
In that moment, everything changed. The season he had worked so hard for ended not with a trophy or a celebration, but with a bumpy ambulance ride to the hospital, with X-rays, surgery, and the uncertainty of whether he’d ever play again. The weeks that followed were filled with frustration, tears, and small victories. Learning to walk again, doing rehab exercises, and facing the mental challenge of staying motivated when every step felt impossible.
The Start of the Comeback
And yet, even through the pain and setbacks, a determination burned brighter than ever. This wasn’t the end of his story, it was the start of the comeback that would define him, not by the injury he endured, but by the strength, patience, and courage he showed in returning to the game he loved—baseball.
When January arrived, winter workouts were already underway, but for him, it wasn’t about keeping stats or winning games, it was about stepping back onto the field, slowly reclaiming what the injury had taken. The first swings off the tee felt awkward, his legs reminded him of the fracture with every step, and the first throws brought back memories of pain. But with every catch, every ground ball, and every carefully measured sprint, he grew stronger not just physically, but mentally.

Progress Measured in Patience
Practices became milestones, each one a small victory that added up. He learned patience in a way he never had before, celebrating progress instead of rushing results. And even when the season officially ended in mid-July, the real triumph wasn’t recorded in the box score, it was in his resilience, the pride in his effort, and the joy of simply being able to play again.
From Awkward Steps to Running Again
The road from being completely sidelined to running again was…well, a journey. At first, he couldn’t put any weight on his leg without wincing, so walking looked more like a cautious, one-legged hop. Then came the awkward stage. Tentative steps, stiff ankles, and the occasional stumble that had us both laughing nervously in the living room. Each day brought tiny victories. He could bend it a little more, straighten it a little more, but he still looked like a newborn giraffe trying to figure out its legs. By midseason, those awkward hops turned into clumsy jogs, and by the end of summer, he was running almost normally, though we all secretly missed the wobbly “penguin shuffle” that had been his signature move for weeks.
He was never the fastest kid on the field to begin with, so now, trying to make it to first base on a bum leg turned every routine grounder into a high-stakes event. That slow trot felt like a sprint marathon, and every play became a nail-biter, not because of the opponent, but because we all held our breath, silently cheering for his “fastest slow leg” to carry him safely home. Even with the limp, the determination in his stride made it clear. Speed wasn’t the point anymore—heart and grit were.
A Winning Season, On and Off the Field
By the end of the season, the team had played exceptionally well, finishing with a winning record that made every practice and game worth it. But more importantly, my son proved to himself, and to all of us, that he could still play the game he loves. He even managed to send one ball flying out of the park, a perfect reminder that determination can outweigh any setback. With summer behind us and a winning season in the books, we’re looking forward to next year, excited for baseball, and leaving football in the past—for now.
More Than the Scoreboard
This summer, the scoreboard didn’t matter. What mattered was the comeback, the determination, and the reminder that setbacks, no matter how big, don’t define who we are, they reveal what we’re capable of when we refuse to give up.
